About Ocala FL
History & Culture
Located in Northern Florida, Ocala is a sizable city with a population of 57,000 residents. It serves as the seat of Marion County and is also known by its nickname, the Horse Capital of the World. Established in 1849, Ocala, Florida has developed into a prime location for visitors who love the sun.
The first thoroughbred horse farm in Florida was established in 1943 by a native of Indiana. The man, Carl G. Rose, bought land along State Highway 200 and dubbed the property Rosemere Farm. The following year, one of his horses became the first horse thoroughbred raised in Florida to win a state race.
It wasn’t long until href Bonnie Heath set up his own thoroughbred farm in Ocala and went on to produce a horse that won the Kentucky Derby. While Rosemere Farm was sold years ago, Bonnie Health Farm remains under the ownership of the Heath family.
